International Women’s Day

March 8, 2010

Today marks the 99th celebration of International Women’s Day.  A global day that celebrates woman’s economic, business, and social achievements.

Unfortunately, women around the world are still fighting for equal rights which have not been attained yet in most countries.  Woman’s rights differ across this region.  Women is Saudi Arabia for example, do not have the right to do… well, almost anything (but hey they have their own identification cards!! *sarcasm*), whilst in Kuwait women may have gained the right to vote but still lack the right to grant their non-Kuwaiti husbands and children citizenship, which also is the case in Lebanon.  Jordan, allowed women to vote in 1974, but still suffer from “honor killings” incidents for which the punishment is anything but severe!  The recent decade has witnessed a vast improvement in woman’s rights in the region but the struggle to receive equal rights remains ongoing.
